Instagram Features nedir?
Instagram uzun videoyu ilk kez denemiyor.
On 26 October 2026, Instagram announced that it is testing a new format called Features: horizontal long-form videos of up to 90 minutes that selected creators can upload. For a platform that has put short, vertical video at its centre for years, this is a step that invites a rethink of many production decisions, from the shoot to the edit. Below I look at the verified details of the announcement, its background and what it could mean for creators.
What is Instagram Features?
According to reports published the same day by Engadget, The National and Digital Trends, the announcement came in a video featuring Instagram head Adam Mosseri, with VP of Product Tessa Lyons explaining the format in more detail. The points the reports agree on:
- The format is called Features; videos are horizontal (widescreen) and can run up to 90 minutes.
- For now it is a test: it is not open to everyone, only to selected creators.
- The initial focus is content that is naturally long, such as podcasts and comedy shows.
- Short Reels are meant to act as an entry point that leads viewers to the full-length version of the same content.
- The videos can be watched on phones, but the format was designed with the TV screen in mind.
Reports describe the scale of the test differently, so I am not giving a figure here; it is more accurate to update this post once official details are confirmed.
Background: moving towards the TV screen
This step did not come out of nowhere. According to Meta's official announcement of 22 June 2026, the Instagram for TV app arrived on Samsung smart TVs (2020 models and newer) in the US; together with Amazon Fire TV and Google TV, it now reaches most connected TV devices in the US. In the same announcement, Instagram stated that it was testing a dedicated home for horizontal videos and exploring longer-form creator content, episodic series and live video on TV. The Features test in October can be read as a concrete step in that direction.
From IGTV to today
This is not Instagram's first attempt at long video. The company introduced IGTV on 20 June 2018: videos were full screen and vertical, and could be up to an hour long. According to a TechCrunch report dated 28 February 2022, Instagram announced it was ending support for the standalone IGTV app and would focus on bringing video together in its main app. Today's approach differs in two clear ways: the format is now horizontal and built for viewing on TV, and short videos are positioned not as a rival to long content but as a doorway to it.
Horizontal vs vertical video: what changes in production?
From a cinematography and editing point of view, the key issue is aspect ratio. The 16:9 horizontal frame is the basic canvas of film and television; the 9:16 vertical frame is a language shaped for one-handed phone viewing. If a piece of content needs both a long horizontal version and short vertical cut-downs, that relationship has to be planned before the shoot:
- Framing plan: When shooting horizontally, keeping a central safe area that still works in vertical crops makes later reframing much easier.
- Resolution headroom: A vertical crop from a horizontal image uses only a small part of the frame; shooting at a higher resolution leaves room for sharpness in those crops.
- Editing rhythm: A 90-minute piece needs a different narrative structure from a few-second Reel: chapters, transitions and a dramaturgy that keeps the audience watching.
- Sound: On a TV, dialogue clarity and a balanced mix are far more noticeable than on a phone speaker.
What does it mean in practice?
Features is still a test; access is limited and details may change. The direction, however, is fairly clear: Instagram is trying to place long, horizontal, TV-friendly content alongside short vertical video. For brands and creators, the practical takeaway is to think in a way that yields both long and short versions from a single shoot: a horizontal main edit, and vertical Reels derived from it that lead viewers to the full piece.
In my own production practice, video, drone, editing and sound design are not separate jobs; they are the same story shaped for different screens. You can browse earlier work in the References section, or get in touch about a project via the contact page.
Was ist Instagram Features?
